Imaginative brooch with four graduated saphiret sapharine cabochons. Copper setting, blackened front. Safety clasp. 1950s. Saphiret stones are sapphire colored glass stones mixed with melted gold, so the stone looks brown from some angles and blue from others. These were made in the mid 19th century upto the beginning of the 20st. In later years these stones were also used by costume jewelry producers in their settings, but they did not use real gold anymore but gold toned material. These stones are called sapharine stones. Weiss, Regency, Florenza and Whiting & Davis used them in many of their 1950s jewelry designs. (There is no cut in one of the cabs, it only seems that way in the picture.)
