Ankie Martens designs exceptional bags that are made of varying fabrics and materials. Inspiration derives from themes as diverse as Baroque and fifties-glamour. The combination of antique and new materials and objects make every bag unique. The baroque bags have fanning peacock feathers, rich embroidery, gold or silver elements and pearls. Luscious women feature against a back drop of velvet, brocade and damask. The bags are a mix of kitsch and chique with an air of Romanticism.
September 2009 Creamy, feminine ladies and holy madonnas feature in the work of artist Ankie Martens. Present and past combine effortless. From several art historical schools elements are taken: Baroque, Rococo, Pre-Rafaelism are combined with Pop Art and nowadays (sub-)cultures. Old artifacts get new meaning, objects with mileage are used. In this there is a layeredness of meaning: a melancholic sensitivity, a romantic longing, a memory of times gone by. The bags are wearable art on your arm or can be hung on the wall of your home.
With each new design there is an intuitive search for the right energy, balance between strength and softness, a journey undertaken to treasure rooms full of antique and rich fabrics. Old and new materials and objects are being combined. Flirtations endeavored with kitsch and chic. Femininity is being celebrated in embroidery, velvet, silk, pearls and frivolous lace. Exciting contracts with rough, masculine materials like leather and metal provide protection and power. Each piece is unique. Within the bag alluring finds from the boudoir or relics.
